Carolynn Helton's Classes
This site shows all the classes I have taught or currently teach. My goal is to have all the curriculum available here online for students, parents and myself. Currently I am teaching Photography/Yearbook, Art Exporations, Video/Media, Leadership and Mixed Media Arts at ERCLC (Eleanor Roosevelt) .
Elements of Art and Principles of Design
This presentation is the core of this project. There are images of Art (giving insight into art history and artists) depicting each of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design with a short description.
This Document should be used for you to keep track of where you are on this project.
Overview:
The Elements of Art are commonly used in combination with the Principles of Design. These Elements of Art listed below are used in making good compositions. This is a lesson in visual problem solving, creating artwork for each that shows the solution you came up with. While each artwork needs to show that particular Element of Art, the type of art and creativity largely comes from your preferences and way of expressing it. You will learn more about the way you prefer to express the art as we continue through them and into the Principles of Design.
Requirements:
You will need to create a unique artwork that depicts each of the Elements of Art. You will need to work through thumbnail sketches/ideas first, see sample below. Once you narrow down the four you will use, 1 for each of the Line section. MAKE SURE YOU ARE VISUALLY SOLVING THE PROBLEM PRESENTED FOR EACH in your composition. YOU NEED TO HAVE TWO ELEMENTS RUN OFF THE PAGE, none of these should be completely centered without elements going off the edges. MAKE THESE SQUARE! If you have a ruler go with either 4"x4" for the final artwork or if you like to work larger 6"x6" or 8"x8." If you do not have a ruler, use an edge of a book or other item, but make all edges the same distance to fit on your page. DO NOT go smaller than 4"x4."

LINE
1. Movement and/or Direction - Your eye follows the direction of the lines in your image. Lines that come to a point or are curvy draw your attention. Show this. Remember to have items flow off at least two edges..
2. Pattern and/or Texture - A pattern is a shape that repeats. Texture shows the surface and can repeat. Texture used for this assignment needs to have elements that repeat.
3. Implied - This is not a real line. A row of birds makes an implied line as does dots or patterns. It can also be a drawing where your eye finishes what would be the edge even if it is not there as in the pear below. Your eye will connect objects to make a line.
4. Action and or Emotion - Lines can be expressive and used to show emotions or action. You can have both or just one of the Action and/or Emotion lines. Use them to create energy.
FORM
5. Chiaroscuro - Extreme use of light and dark. You should have very dark darks and light lights. YOU NEED TO SHOW THE SHAPE (ROUNDNESS) OF THE OBJECT, THE FORM. its roundness and volume needs to be apparent.
VALUE
6. Value - show gradation...at least 8 but preferably all 10 values as you did in the gradation squares. While this can show form as well, it is more about showing lots of shades/value in the drawing.
SHAPE
7. Geometric - All items need to be geometric shapes. Think of mathematical shapes, man made shapes. NOT curvy or nature. However you can make a flower which is usually organic out of geometric shapes to show the contrast. You can also cut out pieces of paper, paper bags, tissues etc... and glue them on the surface if you like.
8. Organic - ONLY shapes in nature that are curvy, natural such as flowers, people, animals , trees, plants and such. NO geometric shapes.
9. Half Geometric/ Half Geometric Shapes - Show a contrast and even balance of both geometric shapes and organic shapes
