Carolynn Helton's Classes
This site shows all the classes I have taught or currently teach. My goal is to have all the curriculum available here online for students, parents and myself. Currently I am teaching Photography/Yearbook, Art Exporations, Video/Media, Leadership and Mixed Media Arts at ERCLC (Eleanor Roosevelt) .
Natural Light Portraits
Each section will require 3 photos each. Follow the instructions for each of those three. Each photos data will tell me which lens you used.
For the first photo of each section:
make sure to use a 50mm lens and have the F stop (Aperture) between 1.8 to 2.8.
This is a prime lens and great for portraits. It lets you get a very shallow depth of field at 1.8. (Shallow depth of field = blurred backgrounds, great for when the background is not interesting or you want blurred colors/light and the focus to be on the subject/portriat.).
For the second photo of each section:
make sure to use a 85mm lens and have the F stop (Aperturel) between 1.8 to 2.8.
This will look simular to the 50mm lens but the higher number focal length (85mm) will show more compression.
For the third photo of each section:
make sure to use a 28-70 mm lens and have the F stop (Aperture= A on the dial) between 4 to 5.6.
at 50, the depth of field is not the greatest on this lens but you get a compressed effect with gives you that blurred background when zoomed in to 70mm.

Golden light can be taken with your cell phone since you will not be able to with these cameras.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BACKGROUNDS ON ALL PHOTOS! THE BACKGROUND NEEDS TO FILL THE AREA BEHIND, BE INTERESTING OR BE BLURRED OFF FROM A LOW APERTURE SETTING.

POSE YOUR SUBJECT. Have hands be doing something so the person isn't feeling awkward if needed, guide them for more flattering angles.
